Harimau Malaya captain LaVere Corbin-Ong believes the team is moving in the right direction after a FIFA ASEAN Cup that ended with a bronze medal, he told FIFA in an interview published on 5 October.
The medal came from a 1-0 win over Vietnam in the bronze final at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on 5 October. In the group stage, Harimau Malaya beat Bangladesh 3-0 and Singapore 6-0 and drew 0-0 with Indonesia. FIFA’s article says they were the only team to finish the tournament without conceding a goal.
Corbin-Ong, a defender, told FIFA that winning the last match and finishing without conceding was a very positive aspect of the campaign. He said the players keep the same attitude “whoever our opponent is and whatever position we are playing in,” and that they want to make the country proud.
“We’re on the right track and we have to keep on moving forward,” Corbin-Ong said. Looking ahead to qualifying, he added: “We’ll be ready, developed, and come out even stronger”.
According to FIFA, Harimau Malaya have friendlies scheduled for November before the next phase of their programme, with the 2030 World Cup Qualifiers among the bigger challenges ahead.
