FAM has published the full schedule for Harimau Malaya’s FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign, and it is a short, crowded one: three group matches inside a week, all of them in Indonesia.
Group A, and the three opponents
Harimau Malaya are in Group A alongside the hosts Indonesia, Singapore and Bangladesh, while Group B brings together Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Pakistan. The tournament is played in Jakarta and Bandung between 25 September and 5 October.
The same release sets out the world rankings behind the draw: Harimau Malaya at 136, Bangladesh at 181, Indonesia at 118 and Singapore at 148.
The fixtures, in Malaysian time
- Bangladesh, at Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, on Friday 25 September at 5.00pm.
- Indonesia, at Gelora Bung Karno again, on Monday 28 September at 8.30pm.
- Singapore, at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, on Thursday 1 October at 8.30pm.
The two group winners meet in the final back at Gelora Bung Karno on Monday 5 October at 9.00pm Malaysian time, and the runners-up play for third place at the same ground earlier that day, at 5.00pm.
Before the flight
The 23 names came in the same release. They are covered separately: the squad for the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Camp opens at home on Monday 21 September and the party flies to Jakarta the day after.
What the last campaign said
Malaysia’s most recent tournament was the ASEAN Championship in July and August, and FAM says only five of that squad have been kept for this one. Their record in that campaign was a mixed one.
Harimau Malaya beat Laos 4-0 in Cheras and edged the Philippines 1-0 on the same ground, then lost 2-0 in Bangkok to Thailand. The semi-final went 2-0 to Vietnam in Kuala Lumpur and 2-0 again in Hanoi.
