Johor Darul Ta’zim 6-0 Svay Rieng: patience first, then a rout

Held level for most of the first half, the AFF report says, Johor Darul Ta’zim then scored six. Where the margin came from, and what Group B asks next.

Johor Darul Ta’zim beat Svay Rieng 6-0 at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on 8 October, the first match of their Group B campaign in the ASEAN Club Championship. On paper it reads like a walkover. For most of the first half it was nothing of the kind.

Two easy readings of a scoreline like this are worth setting aside first. The first is that the visitors never stood up to it. The AFF’s match report describes Svay Rieng goalkeeper Vireak Dara as kept busy early on, denying the hosts again and again. The same report has the visitors threatening “sporadically” at the other end. The second assumption is that the gap was obvious from kick-off. It was not: the game stayed goalless until Arif Aiman scored in the 39th minute.

So what turned a stubborn first half into six goals without reply? Three reasons, ranked.

The first goal unlocked everything

The AFF report puts it plainly: once Arif scored, “the floodgates opened”. The minutes bear that out. Marcos Guilherme scored in the 51st minute, Kevin Medina in the 61st, Shahab Zahedi in the 70th and Daniesh Amirruddin in the 78th and 86th. A side that had held firm for most of the first half conceded five times in the second. That is the shape of the night: one breach, and the resistance did not recover.

StraitScore’s view: this is the most important reason, because everything else followed from it. Before the opener, the AFF account is of a goalkeeper doing his job well; after it, the account is of a side “in full flow”.

The bench finished the job

The second reason is depth. According to the AFF, Shahab scored three minutes after coming on as a substitute, and Daniesh, “another late substitute”, scored twice. That makes three of the six goals the work of players who began the evening on the bench. With the game already won, Johor Darul Ta’zim kept adding, and it was the replacements who did it.

That matters beyond one evening. A group campaign that runs from October into April is not carried by a starting line-up alone, and on this showing the Malaysian Super League champions, as the AFF describes them, have more than one way to score.

A set piece broke the game open

The third reason is smaller but telling. The AFF reported that Kevin Medina headed in a delivery from a dead ball taken by Arif Aiman for the third goal. Its match report adds that Medina “rose unmarked”. Arif therefore had a hand in two of the first three goals, scoring one and supplying another. Guilherme, who scored the second, was named the Shopee Star of the Match.

A clean sheet, as asked

Before the match, Johor Darul Ta’zim coach Xisco Muñoz said his side had to learn from past errors and keep a clean sheet, Utusan Malaysia reported. The last time these two clubs met, at Svay Rieng Stadium on 4 December 2025, it finished 2-2. This time Johor Darul Ta’zim conceded nothing at all, which is exactly what their coach had asked for. Judged against his own stated aim, the evening was a complete success.

The visitors were also short-handed. Utusan Malaysia reported that Svay Rieng coach Matthew McConkey confirmed before the match that injured import Cristian Roque could not play. StraitScore’s view: one absence does not account for a margin of six goals.

What it means in Group B

The other two Group B matches that day were tighter. Persib Bandung came from a goal down to beat Port FC 3-1, and Công An Nhân Dân beat Lion City Sailors 1-0 in Singapore, the AFF reported. Both of those winners are still to come for Johor Darul Ta’zim, and both away from home: Công An Nhân Dân at Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi on 19 November, kick-off 8.30pm Malaysian time, and Persib Bandung in Bandung on 17 December.

That is where this result will be measured. A home rout of a side missing an injured import says something about depth and finishing; a trip to Hanoi will say more about whether that holds against a side that also started with a win.

The verdict: a convincing opener, built on patience rather than a fast start, with the bench doing the late damage and the clean sheet the coach wanted secured. It is the right way to begin, and nothing more yet.
