Selangor FC beat Penang FC 3-1 at MBPJ Stadium in Petaling Jaya on 17 October. Chrigor Moraes scored twice and substitute Z. Khalili added the third in stoppage time. Selangor FC had started the evening third, with 12 points from four wins. The win draws them level on points with Johor Darul Ta’zim in the Malaysia Super League.

How the game went

Moraes scored in the 11th minute. Utusan Malaysia reported that he followed up after goalkeeper Ramdhan Hamid parried the ball. H. Azim of Penang FC was booked in the 37th minute.

Both coaches changed things at the break. Selangor FC sent on H. Boumous for Vitor Pernambuco at 46’, while Penang FC replaced S. Fikri with K. Naskam and D. Tumbas with I. Iziruddin. Boumous was booked in the 48th minute.

Moraes scored again at 51’, from a pass by Cheng. That was the moment the evening tilted for good.

Penang FC did respond. K. Akmal was booked at 63’, and two minutes later A. Zamri came on for H. Azim and M. Bobojonov for E. Celestine. Brundo then scored at 69’, set up by Kosimov. The visitors were back within a goal.

Selangor FC closed it from their bench. Z. Khalili came on for J. Tabinas at 82’, and he scored at 90+4’.

On the discipline sheet, Penang FC’s 3 bookings went against the visitors. Selangor FC’s 1 booking was the home side’s tally.

Why Selangor won

The easy explanation is the occasion. Selangor FC said this was the club’s 2,000th match since its founding in 1921, and that Penang FC were also the opponents in its very first match that year. It makes a good story, but history does not score goals.

The second easy explanation is that Penang FC simply rolled over. They did not. They went to their bench at half-time and again at 65’, and they scored.

The real reasons, in order. First, the early goal: Selangor FC led from the 11th minute, so Penang FC spent most of the evening chasing. Second, Moraes, who scored both goals that built the lead. Third, the bench: the substitute who came on at 82’ scored the goal that settled it.

There is a fourth reason, and it is about Penang FC rather than their hosts. They have scored four league goals in five matches. Three of those came in a single game, the 3-2 win over Kelantan Red Warrior FC on 12 September. A side that scores that rarely cannot afford to concede first away from home.

What the table says

Selangor FC have won all five league matches. They have 15 points, the same as Johor Darul Ta’zim. What separates them is goals: Johor Darul Ta’zim have scored 25 and conceded none. Selangor FC have scored 16 and conceded four. Kuching City FC are next with 12 points.

In Selangor FC’s own preview, Selangor head coach Kim Pan-gon said “the team’s condition has not been very good” over the previous few days. Whatever the problem was, it did not show in the result.

Penang FC have four points from five matches. Only Kelantan Red Warrior FC, without a point, sit below them.

This fixture has gone one way lately. Selangor FC won 5-1 in George Town in December 2025. They won 4-0 at MBPJ Stadium on 2 May 2026.

Verdict

StraitScore’s view: this was a controlled win, not a dazzling one, and that is what a title challenger needs from a home match against a side near the bottom. Moraes gave Selangor FC the lead twice over, the bench finished it, and the one goal they conceded changed nothing. Penang FC competed for spells, but four goals in five matches is the number that defines their season so far. Selangor FC host Star City FC at MBPJ Stadium on 1 November at 9pm, and Penang FC host Melaka FC at City Stadium in George Town the same day at 5pm.
