Star City FC restart in October 4-1 down in the Malaysia FA Cup quarter-final

The international break has given Star City FC time off. What waits at the end of it is the match their season has been pointing at.

The month the club has set out

On its own account, the club listed three fixtures for October: a Malaysia FA Cup tie on 11 October, and Malaysia Super League matches on 16 and 31 October.

The cup tie is the quarter-final second leg, at MBPJ Stadium in Petaling Jaya, kicking off at 20:30. Five days later they are at Kelantan Red Warrior FC for Matchday 5, at 21:00 on 16 October. The month closes with Selangor FC again on 31 October, Matchday 6, also at 21:00.

A four-goal hole

Selangor FC won the first leg 4-1 at Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium on 19 September, which is the number the second leg has to answer. The full account of that night is in Selangor FC win 4-1 at Star City FC in the Malaysia FA Cup quarter-final.

It is the same opponent twice inside three weeks, in two different competitions, which makes the training in between worth more than most.

Where the league has them

Star City FC are 11th in the Malaysia Super League with two points from four matches — two draws, two defeats, four goals scored and 13 conceded.

No league win has come yet. They lost 3-1 at Sabah FC on the opening matchday, then 7-0 at Johor Darul Ta’zim, before drawing 2-2 at Negeri Sembilan FC and 1-1 at home with Terengganu FC.

The two draws are the shape of the improvement: from seven conceded in one night to two matches level. The cup is where that has to count first.
