Three Malaysian match officials have been named for next year’s AFC Asian Cup. FAM said on 24 September that Nazmi, Mu’azi and Zairul had been selected for the 2027 tournament in Saudi Arabia.
The association was posting on the back of an announcement by the AFC the same day: a list of 76 match officials appointed to officiate the finals, which run from 7 January to 5 February.
What the announcement says, and what it leaves out
Not a great deal beyond the three names. FAM gives them as Nazmi, Mu’azi and Zairul, without surnames, and does not separate the referees from the assistants.
Nor does the post deal with assignments, which is the part supporters usually want. A place on a list of 76 is a place in the pool for a month-long tournament; which official takes which match is settled at the finals themselves, and nothing published today anticipates that.
The distinction is worth drawing because a selection like this is often read as more than it is. What has happened is that three Malaysians are in a group of 76, for a competition that begins in January.
The nearer Malaysian date
While that is a story about 2027, the immediate one belongs to Harimau Malaya, who begin the FIFA ASEAN Cup against Bangladesh at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on 25 September, kicking off at 5pm Malaysian time.
The squad FAM settled on has the players travelling. The officials named this week are a longer story, on a slower clock, but they belong to the same federation’s week.
