Harimau Malaya beat Singapore 6-0 in Bandung on 1 October and still missed out on the FIFA ASEAN Cup final. Bergson scored three of the six, the first of them a penalty.

FIFA’s match report sets out what was at stake. The side went into the last round of Group A level on points with Indonesia, having drawn with them in Jakarta earlier in the week. Indonesia were at home to Bangladesh in Jakarta at the same time.

Bergson opened the scoring from the spot after eight minutes. Manuel Hidalgo then went past several defenders and squared for Stuart Wilkin, who swept in the second in the 26th minute. Bergson added his second in the 62nd minute from Arif Aiman’s pass.

Paulo Josue scored the fourth in the 76th minute, Syahir Bashah the fifth in the 87th minute, and Bergson completed his hat-trick with the sixth in stoppage time, at 90+3’. That was three goals in the final 17 minutes.

It was not enough. The match in Bandung ended before the one in Jakarta, where Indonesia scored in the 96th minute and again in the 97th minute to take the place in the final.

Harimau Malaya now go into Monday’s bronze final, where they meet the runners-up of Group B.
