Selangor FC beat Star City FC 1-0 at MBPJ Stadium on 1 November, and the margin undersells what the evening proved.

At kick-off they were second in the Malaysia Super League, with 15 points from five matches to the 18 from six of Johor Darul Ta’zim. At the final whistle the two sides were level on 18 points from six matches each. Their goal records differ: Johor Darul Ta’zim have scored 28 and conceded none, Selangor FC have scored 17 and conceded 4.

How the game went

The only goal came early. Selangor FC’s own match report says Syahir Bashah played a through ball from the middle of the pitch into the penalty area for Chrigor Moraes, and Hugo Boumous then converted his low cross. Boumous scored in the 16th minute, with Moraes credited with the assist.

Star City FC brought on Ramon Machado at 67’. Moraes, the home captain, was later sent off. The club’s report says the red card came “following his reaction after being pushed by an opposing player”, that the visitors then raised the pressure in search of an equaliser, and that the home side “defended resolutely” until the final whistle.

The wrong reading

The easy reading is that an unbeaten side brushed aside one with a single league win all season. It does not survive the evidence.

First, this was not a stroll. Kim Pan-gon, the Selangor FC head coach, said his side must learn that it needs to convert more of its chances. In the club’s report he put it plainly: “We had a second, third and fourth chance, but failed to score”.

Second, Star City FC were not there for the taking. They have five points from six league matches and have conceded 16 goals. Yet at this same ground on 11 October, in the Malaysia FA Cup quarter-final, Selangor FC led through goals at 9’ and 33’, and Star City FC replied at 61’, 75’ and 90’ to win 3-2. Ramon Machado scored that 90th-minute goal.

The real reasons

The first and bigger reason is that Selangor FC kept a lead they had let slip before. Before the match, Kim said the team had worked on its defending in particular, and recalled the cup tie directly: “our two-goal lead turned into a 3-2 loss”. This time the lead was a single goal, the visitors had the man who scored the late winner in that cup tie on the pitch, and for the closing stage the home side had ten players. The lead held. That is the defensive work Kim described, shown under the hardest test the match could set.

The second reason is the start. The goal came from a move through the middle that the club’s report describes in full, and it came early enough to give Selangor FC something to protect for the rest of the night. Against a side whose previous visit to MBPJ Stadium had produced three goals in the second half, a lead taken early and kept was worth more than the chances that went begging.

So was the lesson of 11 October learned? On this evidence, yes: the same opponent pushed, and this time nothing gave.

For Star City FC, Makan Bola reported that coach Mehmet Durakovic remained proud of his players despite the defeat. It also reported that he praised his substitutes and was disappointed to go home with no points. They travel to Melaka FC on 21 November.

Selangor FC’s report lists the second leg of the Malaysia FA Cup semi-final against Kuching City FC in Kuching on 8 November. In the league they visit Sabah FC on 28 November, and Johor Darul Ta’zim host them on 23 December.

StraitScore’s view: this was not a dominant win but a disciplined one. In a chase with a side that has not conceded a league goal in six matches, holding a one-goal lead with ten men matters more than the chances Selangor FC missed.
