Indonesia are the first champions of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, beating Thailand 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Division 1 final at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, on 5 October. The match kicked off at 9pm Malaysian time.
How the final turned
FIFA’s match report describes Thailand sitting back and waiting for chances on the break against a more adventurous home side, with clear chances hard to come by in the first hour. Thai full-back Nicholas Mickelson then collected two cautions within five minutes, leaving his side with ten men.
Dean James put the hosts ahead in the 84th minute, his free-kick deflecting off substitute Iklas Sanron and past Saranon Anuin. Iklas levelled three minutes later, volleying in a Seksan Ratree cross at the back post to send the final to extra time.
In extra time Peeradol Chamrasamee put Thailand ahead in the 111th minute after Anan Yodsangwal took the ball off Elkan Baggott. Baggott equalised five minutes later with a shot that went in off the underside of the bar. In the shoot-out, Thai captain Sarach Yooyen missed his side’s third penalty and Emil Audero then saved from Nattapong Sayriya to win the title.
FIFA’s report notes that Indonesia had gone eight matches and ten years without beating Thailand before this final.
